We are delighted that Couture Gallery artist Joanne Grüne-Yanoff has been chosen to represent the art space Detroit Stockholm at Supermarket this year. Stop by to see her fantastic installation of 100 honeycomb footprints and 100 beehive drawings that continues Grrüe-Yanoff's ongoing exploration of identity, transience, and home.



Joanne Grüne-Yanoff, born in 1966, has been exhibited internationally since the 1990's. 
She currently lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Her unique approach to storytelling is evidenced in her diverse body of works. Taking as her point of departure everyday emotions and experiences, she weaves a rich tale of humanity that tugs at our inner threads. While a few of these experiences may be new to us, the majority are easily recognizable as our own. 

Grüne-Yanoff employs an impressive array of different media -including sound & video installation, paper, sewing, photography, sculpture & painting- to compose her stories.  With this striking chorus, she creates a singular voice that is completely her own, creating a rich dialogue that fills the exhibition space with tiny echoes of what it means to be human. Experiencing this space can be as pleasant & poetic as it can be poignant & heartrending. And, long after the work is out of sight, its notes linger, reminding us of an experience we wish to have again.

 In the artist's own words; "In my work I explore hidden urges and secret desires. I am interested in the space between what we say and what we feel; between what we aspire to project, and be, and what we hold inside that might conflict with that ideal. Once in a while, some unconscious gesture accompanies our intended display, and with it, another story is briefly exposed. In those discrete moments, some hidden part of how we mark the world, and how we register the marks the world puts upon us, are revealed.

The Couture Galleri exhibition, Instructions for Hive and Spine, continues Grüne-Yanoff’s long exploration of how individuals navigate the world. For the Couture space the artist has created an installation that reflects specifically upon how we balance our essential needs for both individuality and community.

After drawing and painting a series of beehives, the artist began conversations with economist Jesper Roine, and beekeeper Åsa Angelino. These exchanges, around the self and society, thread through the paintings, sculptures, video and sound installation that compose the exhibition, acting as reminders of who we are, are not, or wish to be.
